Step by step

Leave Bone Bottom and enter The Marrow. From the Bone Bottom bench, head east. The Marrow is the first large region. Shakra is camped in its north-west corner and you will hear her singing before you see her.
Buy the Mosslands Map and The Marrow Map. The Mosslands Map costs 40 Rosaries and covers Moss Grotto and Bone Bottom. The Marrow Map costs 50 Rosaries. Buy both if you can afford them.
Buy the Quill for 50 Rosaries. The Quill lets the map fill in as you explore. Nothing is drawn until you rest at a bench, so the map updates in chunks after each rest.
Buy the Compass for 70 Rosaries and equip it. The Compass is a tool. Open the inventory at a bench, put it in a tool slot, and Hornet appears as a marker on the map.
Buy pins so landmarks mark themselves. The Bench Pin, Bellway Pin, Ventrica Pin and Vendor Pin each cost Rosaries and automatically mark every matching landmark you have discovered. Shell and Ring Markers (40 each) are placed by hand.
Find Shakra again in every new region. She moves one area ahead of you. In the Citadel she is replaced by map machines that sell maps for 40 to 70 Rosaries, and several late maps are free pickups.

That is 28 maps in total. Collecting all of them unlocks the Cartographer achievement. The Mist and Red Memory have no map and never will.

Missed a map? You have not lost it

Go back to Bone Bottom and strike the town bell. Shakra returns and sells any map you skipped. Because of this, nothing about the map system is missable.

Why the map is not filling in

Three usual causes. You have not bought the Quill. You have not rested at a bench since exploring. Or you are in an area whose map you have not bought yet, so there is no outline to fill. Fix those in that order.

Common map questions

How do I get the map in Silksong?

Leave Bone Bottom heading east into The Marrow and listen for singing. That is Shakra the cartographer. Buy the area map from her (40 to 90 Rosaries each) plus the Quill (50 Rosaries), without which the map never fills in. Repeat in every new region. Inside the Citadel, buy maps from map machines instead.

Where is Shakra?

Her first camp is in the north-west of The Marrow. After that she moves one area ahead of you across roughly 13 camps: Deep Docks, Far Fields, Greymoor, lower Shellwood, Wormways, Hunter's March, Blasted Steps, Sinner's Road, Bilewater, Mount Fay, Sands of Karak and High Halls. Follow the singing.

Where do I find the map lady in Silksong?

The map lady is Shakra, the cartographer and the main Silksong map seller. Find her first in the north-west of The Marrow, east of Bone Bottom. She sings at her camp, so follow the sound. After that she camps in most Outer Pharloom regions, one area ahead of you, selling each area map for 40 to 90 Rosaries plus the Quill, the Compass and the map pins. In the Citadel, map machines sell the maps instead.

How do I get the flea map in Silksong?

There is no flea map to buy from Shakra. The in-game way to find fleas is Vog, a flea hunter who first appears at the top of the Putrified Ducts, above the Bellway station. Pay him Rosaries and he marks the Lost Fleas you are still missing on your map. You reach the Putrified Ducts in Act 2, either with the Faydown Cloak from Mount Fay or through Bilewater after Groal the Great. Before that, use the Lost Flea filter on the interactive map on this site, which works as a flea map from the start of the game.

Where are the flea locations on the Silksong map?

Silksong has 30 Lost Fleas spread across Pharloom. On the interactive map, untick every marker type except Lost Flea to see only the flea locations, then tick each one off as you rescue it. Rescued fleas join the caravan, which ends up at Fleatopia in the Putrified Ducts.
